Erfahrungsberichte CIBU 480 Bachelor Praktikumskurs

CIBU Studentin Carolin HeldtName of student: Carolin Heldt
Nationality: German
Company name: Credit Solutions Corp.
Areas: HRM, Capital Markets

I first heard about Credit Solutions Corporation (CSC) from a guest speaker at CIBU in my Human Resource Management course. I asked if there was a chance to do an internship at the company. I was looking for an opportunity for applying my theoretical skills to business life. After having started my internship with CSC, I soon started supporting Senior Management, especially in Human Resource Management.

Credit Solutions Corp. is a financial services company. The company purchases charged off accounts from banks and other financial service companies then contact the past due customers and offer them settlements and an array of financial benefits that help them improve their quality of life. My tasks were in different areas and ranged from planning recruiting, Résumé review, candidate interviews, work reports, turnover calculations, and determination of overtime.

Later on, I moved into the Capital Markets Department. There I learned how to contact companies, follow up, channel information, and aid in the preparation major business deals.

My internship gave me valuable insights into business practices, hands-on training by experienced and entrepreneurial professionals and cross-cultural management.

CIBU Studentin Virgine Olive Name of student: Virgine Olivé
Nationality: French
Company name: Budget Rent a Car
Areas: Marketing analysis

Working for “Budget” was a great challenge. It was my first real internship and I did it as part of my CIBU 480 Practicum course. My dream job is to work for a big corporation in the marketing department, and that’s why I chose “Budget” for my internship. It is a well known, world wide company and I can see myself working for “Budget” later on in France.

I worked with my manager on marketing statistics and helped to compare the marketing effectiveness of “Budget” with its main competitors.

I not only learned a lot about my own company, but also got to known the marketing strategies of the car rental businesses in general. Another task was to highlight the effectiveness of an advertisement campaign, which I did by developing a survey. It was an awesome experience.

The most exciting part of my internship was when I went to the company based in Miramar and met my manager for the first time. When he explained to me my Mission and my tasks for the next five months, I could not believe how cool it was to be part of a team. The projects seemed to be real marketing oriented and very useful and important for the company, which made me happy and encouraged me to work hard. It was truly a worthwhile experience.

CIBU Student Ertan ElmaagacliName of student: Ertan Elmaagacli
Nationality: Turkey
Company name: Citizen Diplomacy Council of San Diego (CDCSD)
Areas: Marketing, Web Administrator

I had the privilege of working at Citizen Diplomacy Council of San Diego (CDCSD). The council is working in cooperation with the U.S. Department of State, Library of Congress, USAID, Fulbright Exchange Programs, and the work they do brings over 600 emerging leaders from over 145 countries to San Diego each year. The Citizen Diplomacy Council arranges professional appointments and the ‘American experience’ for our visitors through home hospitality and public receptions. CDCSD is the region’s leading international organization and the “door” to the greater San Diego. It links San Diego-area people, businesses and institutions with hundreds of rising and established global leaders each year and has added millions of federal and foreign dollars to our local economy.

I had several responsibilities in different departments. Some of my favourite tasks are listed below:
Marketing: Creating, maintaining website; creating brochures and flyers, creating “Membership Directory”, creating “Annual Report”, creating newsletter (quarterly); creating invitations, handbooks, advertisement for special events, etc.
Computer System Administrator/technical advisor: maintaining computer system; purchasing new computer equipment; purchasing, installing and maintaining software; advising in purchasing new computer system including several workstations, server and printers, etc.
Web Administrator: create, maintain websites; including creation, modification, and technical support for communication

The most exciting part of my internship was that I could work independently and that I was responsible for what I was doing! In an internship it is usual and typical for an intern to be told what to do, but in my case, I was integrated as a full member of the organization. This included the support of all my actions and decisions by the Executive Director. I took full responsibility for my efforts and was honored by trust and belief in my abilities. I felt very comfortable with my colleagues. When I started my coworkers were strangers; by the end of my internship I had friends. I did twelve months of internship and afterwards I was given the status of an honorary membership for another twelve months. All in all, I worked for 24 months, and I would do it again, anytime!

CIBU Student Jacob KopiczakName of student: Jacob Kopiczak
Nationality: Poland
Company name: Colizer
Areas: Business Plan

I was fortunate to have had the chance to work with two other interns in a team at Colizer, a start-up company, which has become San Diego’s premiere Internet marketing firm. It focuses on Internet marketing solutions like search engine optimization and online advertising. Colizer is a turn-around specialist if a company’s website does not receive enough traffic. The company is in the process of creating community portals featuring the services of small businesses, using its own technology based on proven open source solutions. (It is closing the gap between the marketing needs of small businesses and today’s consumer behaviour by providing Internet and marketing services without the need for Internet access or computer usage.)

In our first team project, the goal was to research and find business groups related to our company in San Diego. The team was in charge of contacting these companies and to build up business relations. I was challenging and satisfying as we learned a lot to deal with people in a professional manner.
